The outreach program undertaken by the Directorate of Public Education and Corruption Prevention is gaining momentum, with members of the public now gaining insight knowledge on what corruption entails.
In addition to the sensitization seminars held at various Regional Offices country–wide for the past two years, the Directorate also conducted similar trainings at various Local Authorities and public schools in regions such as Karas, Hardap, Omaheke, Otjozondjupa, Erongo, Oshana,Oshikoto and Kunene between March and June 2010.
Feedback gained from these seminars confirm that members of the public now have a positive understanding that the mandate of ACC is not only to investigate suspects of corrupt practices but more importantly to prevent corruption through awareness campaigns. This understanding is encouraging because the public now understands that they as well have a role to play to combat and prevent corruption. Those who attended the various sensitization seminars acknowledged that corruption is a barrier to economic development. During discussions, they strongly denounced corruption arguing that corruption results in institutional mismanagement and misuse of public properties. They do not want to see the country moving backward in terms of development. For these reasons, they have vowed to join partnership with the ACC in the fight against corruption.
In March alone, the Directorate held Seminars at JA Nell Senior Secondary School and Suiderling Senior Secondary School in Keetmanshoop as well as Dannie Joubert Secondary School and Mariental High School in Mariental.
Similar seminars were also held at Epaco Secondary School and Wennie Du Plesie High School in Gobabis as well as Oputuavanga Secondary School in Opuwo in the Omaheke and Kunene Regions respectively.
During the month of April, the Directorate held seminars for the following town councils: Oshakati, Ondangwa, Ongwediva and Helao Nafidi in Oshana and Ohangwena Regions.
Other seminars were also held at Swakopmund and Henties Bay Municipalities in Erongo Region in May. In the month of June, the Directorate also conducted seminars at Opuwo, Sesfontain and Khorixas in the Kunene Region. The seminar at Opuwo in Kunene Region was attended and addressed by the Governor of Kunene Region, Honourable Dudu Murorua and the Director of the ACC, Mr Paulus Noa. The Director of ACC also delivered a presentation to the participants at Sesfontein and Khorixas in Kunene Region as well as in Swakopmund and Henties Bay in Erongo Region on “The Impact of Corruption on Good Governance”.
Sensitization seminars are held with the aim to educate the public on the dangerous effects of corruption, enlist and foster public confidence and support in combating corruption.
